It may seem strange to some that in the age of digital computers and music software, some electronic musicians still insist on using analog equipment. While there are plenty who do not, there are also those whose music is defined vintage analog sounds. The fact of the matter is that digital equipment and music software for the most part simply attempt to emulate analog waveforms and circuitry and some believe a better sound can be achieved by using such equipment directly instead of imitations.

By making use of the extensive Alternative Electronics music equipment database, we've put together a list of the most widely used analog music equipment.

First on the list was the Korg MS-20. First released in 1978, the MS-20 is one of the sought-after synthesizers today. Its semi-modular architecture allows for complex patch programming and sound creation not available on most modern synths. Among the countless musicians and bands who have used the MS-20 are Depeche Mode, Aphex Twin, Autechre, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant, Einstürzende Neubauten,:wumpscut:, Front 242 and Front Line Assembly, to name a few.

In second place was the Roland SH-101. Along with the TB-303, also from Roland, this unit is credited with spawning the Acid Techno scene. The SH-101 is an analog mono synth and its bass lines have been heard on a variety of famous recordings ranging from Drum and Bass and House to Synthpop and Noise. Influential users have included Depeche Mode, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant,:wumpscut:, Mesh, Atari Teenage Riot, Assemblage 23, Nitzer Ebb, Suicide Commando, Velvet Acid Christ and Alec Empire.

The Roland Juno-106 came in third on the list. While it contains some digital components, the Juno-106 is analog / digital hybrid. Full MIDI implementation is a big plus on this unit since this is a feature not usually found on vintage analog equipment. Fans may recognize Juno-106 pads and basses from artists such as Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Autechre, Celldweller, Covenant, Carbon Based Lifeforms, Mesh, Velvet Acid Christ, Neuroticfish, Haujobb and Elegant Machinery.
